Writing the Expository Essay

This website was created to help students develop their writing of Expository essays. The task for 6th grade is to write a well-developed 500-700 word expository essay on how to do some task.

There are 4 main tasks in this assignment which will help students evolve their writing from a brainstorm into a well written final draft done as a word processing document uploaded to the class Google Docs account or emailed to the teacher.

  1. Brainstorm and list steps in outline form
  2. Rough Draft with Introduction, 3-4 detail paragraphs and a concluding paragraph. The student will ask peers for suggestions and submit for the teacher.
  3. The teacher will proofread and suggest revisions
  4. The Final Draft done as a word processing document, saved as a Word Document (.doc) and uploaded or emailed as directed.

The final draft MUST include 5-6 paragraphs as detailed below

  1. Introductory Paragraph: Catch the reader's interest and state the purpose for the essay.
  2. Detail Paragraph #1 which lists what materials or ingredients are needed.
  3. Detail Paragraph #2 which includes the first several steps, using transitional words such as "First of all...", "Next ..."
  4. Detail Paragraph #3 which concludes the steps, again using transitional words, culminating with words such as "Finally..."
  5. Concluding Paragraph: Summarize the purpose of the essay and wish the readers to enjoy what you have suggested to do.
