Summary: Ta-Na-E-Ka is a ritual of adulthood for the members of the Kaw tribe.  It is very important to the adults, but the children of the new generation, including Mary, don't value it very much.  Mary finds a conniving way to avoid the hardships.  Though disappointed at her deceptive ways, her grandfather  comes to see that she had developed ways to survive in the changing, modern adult world.
