Mr. Curry
will be teaching his class, with a special emphasis on project-based learning
using technology. Mr. Curry again spent part of his summer creating
web-based educational units for educators, while serving as an IT intern
at lockheed Martin Space Sciences. He also spent a week around the
4th of July in Washington D.C. at the NEA teachers' convention.
Mr. Curry
is once the GATE coordinator, yearbook advisor and he serves on the School's
technology committee. He also serves on the school district's Report Card,
GATE and Professional Development Committees. Mr. Curry is also the district-wide

Mrs. Lee was one of
the original 5th grade teachers here at Vinci Park. Her students
should expect to work hard to learn their very best. Once again,
Mrs. Lee will be in charge of the school's Safety Patrol.
She has taken on the major
task of teaching the 4/5 combination class this year.
Mrs. Lee has 3 sons who
attended the Berryessa schools, so she has the perspective of a teacher
and a parent. |

Our 5th graders are
very fortunate to have Mr. Panelli make the move with them from 4th to
5th grade. Mr. Panelli works hard to help his students develop their
self-esteem as well as their academic abilities. Mr. Panelli will
continue coordinating the Vinci Park Olympics as he did so well last year. |

Now starting his seventh
year teaching 5th grade here at Vinci Park, Mr. Silva expects his students
to rise to the challenge of doing their best. As a former middle
school teacher, Mr. Silva knows what skills 5th graders need to develop
in order to be ready for 6th grade.
Mr. Silva
serves on the school's Leadership Team, representing the entire 5th grade
team. |

Some 5th Grade Programs
| 5th grade students are
expected to meet the state content standards for each subject. In
order to help students achieve their highest potential, we have some grade
level policies for all 5th graders. |
Leveled Reading Instruction:
To better meet the needs of students, we will be switching teachers for
reading literacy each morning. This will allow teachers to instruct
one or two levels in Reading rather than 4-5 in every class. We will
also be using Accelerated Reading which guides students in success at their
reading level.
Friday Detention:Students
who have not completed their assignments during the week will be given
detention on Friday afternoons, while those students who have earned the
privilege of free play, are given 40 minutes of extra P.E.
Students who have
broken classroom rules may also be sent to detention as a consequence. |
| District P.E. (Tuesdays and Thursdays)We
will again have P.E. specialist teachers working with our students twice
each week.
Computer Lab: We
will once again have the computer lab with Mrs. Johnson teaching us how
to use technology. |
Science
Camp: As part of the 5th grade
Science curriculum, all 5th grade students are expected to attend Science
camp at Walden West. For this year, we will be going in late April.
We will have parent meetings to explain the costs, fundraising opportunities
and other details.
Environmental Eco-Action:Vinci
Park's 5th graders take part in an Eco-Action project to help clean up
our community. Our classes have taken part in the "Adopt-A-Creek"
program of the Santa Clara County Water District. Each class will
make 2-3 clean-up visits to Upper Penitencia Creek, just a few blocks from
our school.
|
| Educational Field Trips:The
teachers schedule field trips for their own classes. Some trips may
be for the entire grade level while others for just one or two classes. |

| Meeting the needs of students: |
|
Differentiated
Instruction
Teachers do all they can to meet the wide range
of needs of our students. Examples of differentiated instruction
include:
-
Title I assistance for students in Reading and/or
Math
-
English Language Development differentiation
for our students who are still in the process of learning English
-
Gifted
and Talented Education (GATE) program which seeks ways to challenge
students who show exceptional cognitive ability in multiple intelligences.
